Jay Walking....in Malaysia.

by Amily Soh. *Sorry for the late publication of this fanmeeting!

“Beautiful girls all over the world, I could be chasing but my time would be wasted, They got Nothin' on you baby...., Nothin' on you baby....”

This song would probably be stuck in your head after you have attended Jay Park’s Fanmeeting, which was recently held at Berjaya Hotel, Manhattan Ballroom 1, Kuala Lumpur. The event, made possible by Absolutelypop Resources, saw a sizeable amount of excited fans and media, attending the 1.5 hour event.

K-Gen had the amazing opportunity to participate in this spectacular event, all thanks to Absolutelypop Resources, which provided K-Gen with 4 complimentary tickets- 2 for admins and 2 for members. The lucky members were Iylia Anis and Sher-Maine Lee, who both won the tickets by joining K-Gen’s contest.

Even though the event had some hiccups (the venue was changed at the very last moment), the fanmeeting itself had been smoothsailing. Fans were kept on their toes, testing their cameras eagerly and getting ready their placards, after they were led into the ballroom minutes before the event starts a little over 2p.m..

As anticipated, the lights were dimmed moments after settling down, and the projector screen lighted up with Jay Park’s logo and accompanied by his famous hit, “Nuthin on you”. Screams and sing-a-longs followed, and it grew louder once the spotlight hit on Jay Park himself, as he came out to the stage from a corner belting out the song with gusto.

Dressed in an all white attire with a personalized JP belt, Jay grooved to the music and managed to get the climax of the performance is of course, the moment when he decided to tear back his jacket and reveal his toned shoulder muscles! He did this a few more times, much to the fan’s delight.

He then belted out another fast song, and danced energetically to the beat. There is no wonder that he is part of AOM (Art of Movement), a group that is synonymous with B-Boy skills in rapping and breakdancing in Seattle, where he is currently residing.

After the energetic performance, the host, Eliza, managed to have a one-on-one session with Jay, who was seen wearing a tight fitting black T-shirt and jeans. It can be noticed that Jay seemed shy at first, only managing to look at the host, and sometimes the floor, while wiping away his sweat. However, he seemed to warm up a bit after that, and managed to crack some jokes and made a few witty remarks that set the crowd in stitches.

Jay was seen occasionally smiling and revealing his inner boyish charms as the “interview” gets personal, which melted the fan’s heart. But fans really get to see his inner charms when the host decided to bring the AOM crew on the stage and questioned them on Jay’s behaviour only known to their childhood friends.

It was quite entertaining to see Jay fidgeting and tossing nervous glances on his fellow AOM friends, as they tried to reveal as many humiliating scenes of Jay, one which involves Jay who didn’t managed to race to the toilet on time.

Then it was finally time for the fan interaction. The fans were chosen from a box of ticket stubs, and the first fan got to have a portrait of herself drawn by Jay himself. The picture arose laughter and drew impressive mutterings among the crowd, and caused a wave of jealousy as Jay signed and presented the drawing to the lucky fan. She even managed to get a hug from the generous Jay himself.

The next fan got to choose 2 scrolls from the bowls provided, with each bowl containing a certain action and body part that the fan get to “use” on Jay. Jay was getting nervous as well, but managed to even do a scary sound effect as the host unrolled the scroll.

The first fan managed to pinch Jay’s cheek, while the second fan managed to hold Jay’s elbow. However, the fan who was made everyone really jealous was the particular fan who managed to touch Jay’s forehead. The host managed to heat things up when she wittingly said “It didn’t really state how she could touch Jay’s forehead”, which led the crowd in the frenzy while chanting “Lips!”.

As a result, the lucky fan got to kissed Jay’s forehead, twice, with a blushing Jay saying “I’m not gonna wash my forehead in a while”. The lucky fan not only has a picture of her kissing Jay’s forehead, but an autograph from Jay too! Another round of fans managed to get a hug and autographs each, after attempting to dance to Jay’s beatboxing.

The show continued with another energetic performance, featuring Jay’s other single “Demon”. As Jay proceeded backstage for a short breather, a duo came onstage and performed some rock songs, which got the crowd on their feet and hands in the air. After their 2 songs, the fans were pining to see Jay again, and was awarded when Jay and his fellow AOM members came onstage to deliver an awesome breakdancing performance which featured a few awesome acts that really wow-ed the crowd.

Jay decided to also bring a slow number, and did just that with fellow AOM member, Cha Cha. Both of them really brought the crowd together with their harmonious voices which had a beat boxing twist to it.

The host then announced that this was the last performance and thanked everyone for coming to the fan meeting. The fans were taken aback, and immediately requested for an encore. To everyone’s delight, Jay appeared on stage again after a few minutes and performed another song. After the song, he bade goodbye and thanked the fans for supporting him. The lights came on, and Jay disappeared from the stage.

The fans then rushed outside the ballroom, and gathered together not wanting to return home immediately. They were rewarded later, as Jay and his crew came out from the ballroom and rushed by to the another ballroom to attend a press conference. The organizers were then seen rushing to get those fans who bought the VIP tickets to gather for a photoshoot with Jay later on.

Those who were not entitled for the photoshoot then proceeded to the registration counter to claim their Jay Park’s poster and ang pau packets. Some were seen taking pictures outside the ballroom with their colourful placards, relishing what they had just experienced.

This fan meeting concluded with success, even though it was short and had a few backstage problems. The fans, nonetheless, enjoyed themselves thoroughly from the smooth fanmeeting and wished to have Jay back in Malaysia again.

K-Gen would like to thank Absolutelypop Resources again for the amazing opportunity to participate in this event. We hope to have such amazing opportunity again to have another K-pop related event in Malaysia.
